Michael Kors & Lance Le Pere Lounge

15 May

Michael Kors & Lance Le Pere Lounge

In recognition of their love of – and great generosity toward – Broadway, the Roundabout Theatre Company named the patrons’ lounge within the Stephen Sondheim Theatre after Michael Kors and Lance Le Pere. As the lucky designers tasked with bringing it to life, we tapped Stephen Sondheim’s creative genius as our inspiration, creating a room that incorporates a mix of subtle and overt references to his body of work. Since Michael and Lance associate Sondheim with a decidedly New York form of urbanity, we chose design elements that speak to the grit and glamour of our city. A neutral palette of concrete and sooty grays is enlivened by accents in antique brass and ebony. Material contrasts abound from crocodile skin to industrial-styled metal and from piano-polished wood to matte stone. As a crowning surprise for the New Yorker who actually looks up, the ceiling provides a glimpse of abstracted sky in the form of a glass tile mosaic in glittering whites, silvers, golds and grays. Finally, sophisticated, tailored upholstery nods to the fashion world where the room’s namesakes have made such an indelible mark.

Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques, even in Japan as a ballet dancer in his 20’s. Performing in a strange and massive production by artist Steven Arnold, it was a heady time in the 1980’s. Steven’s work was collected by Baryshnikov, Diana Vreeland, Cher, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dali and others. This beautifully attired, early 20th century doll in its original case holds lovely memories of place and time, of the utterly unique Steven Arnold, and a circle of dear ballet friends that holds fast to this day. #ballet #japan #antiques

Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” naturally. The most profound gift from his mother and grandmother, and later by “Ed & Tony” was their embrace and encouragement in the development of his eye. Mentorship is everything. Btw, the Davenport part dessert service was made between c1800-1815. That’s well over 200 years of this extraordinary pearlware set existing somewhat intact. The painted scenes tell us it was likely created for an English country house. #antiques #antiqueceramics
