A Cottage by the Sea

Design Log

20 Jun
summer-cottage

As fleeting as the days of summer may be, childhood memories of days at the shore can last a lifetime. Whether it’s frolicking in the pounding, salty surf or counting fireflies in clear, star-filled skies, the impressions are indelible ones, which yesterday’s children inevitably want to share with today’s. When clients of ours sought to recreate this experience for their own growing family, we eagerly applied our sun block and headed to the beach for some good design fun.

In an idyllic setting on the coast of southern Massachusetts, this house sits in a picture-perfect community of cottages, each one more adorable than the next. Although generally well-maintained, it needed brightening and freshening to make it suitable for the fun-loving family that was about to call it their home away from home. To bring in the light we bleached the floors, painted somber woodwork a crisp white, and interspersed some bold bursts of color and pattern. By blending custom upholstery and detailing (check out that headboard!) with affordable online finds, we maximized comfort, use of space, and personality, while keeping within a manageable budget. This charmer by the sea truly embodies the spirit of this wonderful family, and it touches us to think that we’ve had a small part in creating beautiful memories for generations to come.

For the esteemed @pasadenashowcasehouse, we designed this room over 20 years ago, and it still looks fresh and inviting. While decidely traditional, its clean lines, restrained palette and blending of old and new make it equally suited for today. #whitewebbinteriors #interiordesign #showhousedesign #pasadenadesign

The unexpected can often make for great design. I The unexpected can often make for great design. In a room we designed for @kbshowhouse many years ago, we designed an India-inspired studio with a bed niche clad in a shimmering material. Would you have guessed that it’s a collection of tin can lids? The artwork of artist Clare Graham, they certainly introduced something unexpected and wonderfully so. 📸 by @bjornwallander #whitewebbinteriors #interiordesign #kipsbayshowhouse #showhousedesign #nycinteriordesign

For this kitchen we designed in New York’s Hudson Valley, we designed a space that could find inspiration in the great outdoors.
