The Country Table

Design Log

26 Sep
Country Table

The ritual of setting a table is one that conjures feelings of comfort, camaraderie and the prospect of a good meal. Certainly the accouterment of a well-set table is part of what makes a civilized meal so pleasurable. Ceramics, glass, linen and metal can be brought together to create a near infinite variety of looks. Some are formal, others quite simple, but the charm and beauty of a beautifully laid table enhances the experience of dining.

On October 13th, the Hillsdale General Store, will host an event called “The Country Table” to celebrate fall entertaining. Antique china will be combined with hand-made table linens, glassware and table decorations. This will take place during the “Hillsdale Pumpkin Festival”.

The centerpiece of our celebration will be a tabletop that will be raffled off to help raise funds to finish a public garden for the Town of Hillsdale, NY. Vintage transfer-ware from the store will be combined with a lovely tablecloth and custom embroidered napkins created by Boxwood Linen. A centerpiece by Joseph Stabilito will finish off the look along with a pair of antique wood candlesticks from our shop, White Webb Finds.

This perfect Country Table will be one among many displayed throughout the store, but what sets this one apart is that for a mere $20, you could win the entire setup ~ china, linens, the whole lot! Valued at $950, it’s a prize worth going for. Second prize is a gift certificate at the delicious farm-to-table eatery CrossRoads Food Shop. To enter to win, come on over and have a look, or you can send your check to the HECDC with “HGS raffle” written in the subject line. Mail it to: Hillsdale General Store, PO Box 161, 2642 State Route 23, Hillsdale NY 12529.

The drawing will be held on October 20th and announced on theHGS Facebook Page.

Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques, even in Japan as a ballet dancer in his 20’s. Performing in a strange and massive production by artist Steven Arnold, it was a heady time in the 1980’s. Steven’s work was collected by Baryshnikov, Diana Vreeland, Cher, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dali and others. This beautifully attired, early 20th century doll in its original case holds lovely memories of place and time, of the utterly unique Steven Arnold, and a circle of dear ballet friends that holds fast to this day. #ballet #japan #antiques

Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” naturally. The most profound gift from his mother and grandmother, and later by “Ed & Tony” was their embrace and encouragement in the development of his eye. Mentorship is everything. Btw, the Davenport part dessert service was made between c1800-1815. That’s well over 200 years of this extraordinary pearlware set existing somewhat intact. The painted scenes tell us it was likely created for an English country house. #antiques #antiqueceramics
