From Dim to Dazzling: A Kitchen Reimagined

Uncategorized

25 Jun

In this month’s design spotlight, we take you behind the scenes of a truly transformative renovation. What was once a small, dark, and dated kitchen has been reborn as a bright, welcoming space infused with natural light and fresh energy. For a husband who’s an ardent chef and a wife who’s a lover of glass mosaics, this kitchen is a dream come true for two. The heart of the new design? A stunning leafy mosaic that brings lush greenery indoors and creates a vibrant focal point.

The original kitchen simply wasn’t serving its purpose for a client who loves to cook and entertain. Dark and dated finishes added a sense of heaviness, creating a cramped space that felt less than inviting. It was clear this kitchen needed a complete rethink to align with the client’s love of color and passion for hosting.  Collaborating with architect Barry Price, we were sure to get a design that was environmentally sensitive, energy efficient, and cutting edge.

What began as a simple kitchen refresh quickly evolved into a full-scale remodel when an unexpected discovery changed everything. During early demo, we learned that the structure beneath the kitchen was compromised and no longer up to code. While it added time and complexity to the project, it also opened the door to rethink the space more holistically, allowing for upgrades not only in design but also in function and flow.

As we reimagined the space, we knew that it had to delight the chef with flawless function, while dazzling his artist wife with bold, expressive visuals. The newly expanded footprint would include multiple workspaces, island seating, a breakfast table, and an added pantry for prep and additional storage. Brilliantly inspired, Barry Price introduced a series of retractable windows, which open to expose the breakfast area fully to the outdoors and flood the space with light. Al fresco dining anyone?

The finished product reflects a meticulous balance of form and function, anchored by a custom-built island in a rich, forest-green hue that serves as a multifunctional prep and gathering zone. Precision-crafted cabinetry maximizes storage and efficiency, incorporating features like concealed appliances, integrated pull-outs, and tailored drawer organization. Further enhancing the kitchen’s biophilic appeal, we chose an organic, leaf-like glass mosaic to climb the walls around the windows and bloom around the entire kitchen. A locally-made breakfast table creates a warm and inviting space for smaller, more casual meals to take place. From shadow to sunlight, this kitchen now breathes with life—where greenery climbs the walls, and every detail is crafted for joy, connection, and creativity.

Three of these clocks have been in Matthew’s colle Three of these clocks have been in Matthew’s collection for more than twenty years, all have stories. The rooster clock is carved wood, possibly Italian, or perhaps Scandinavian? The most recent addition and most simple in design holds layered meaning that is deeply felt. This English clock from the 1930s gets wound every Sunday and keeps excellent time, each quarter hour heralded by resonate chimes. Matthew loves old clocks so much he wrote a book on the topic! @abbevillepress #antiqueclocks #clocks #clockchimes
