Jewel Tones that Glimmer like Springtime

Design Log

After a long, drearily gray winter, there’s nothing more welcome than the splendid colors of Spring. But since those seasonal hues are so short-lived, we like to surround ourselves with brilliant splashes of color year-round. Even though Mother Nature may be a tad stingy with her best jewels, we like to share.

For an eternal Springtime, we can always count on a rainbow of colors from the amazing glass artisans of Venice. There’s no end to the variety of pieces that one can deploy to make a sparkling, gem-like statement. Whether clustered in a grouping or singled out as a glittering accent, it is sure to evoke the delicate hues of Spring.

For last spring’s Kips Bay Show House, we sought to incorporate a subtle exoticism into our design. For the serenely neutral space, we designed a custom, jewel-toned desk inspired by India. With its combination of rich aubergine, vivid peacock blue and mustardy gold, it stands out as the jewel in the crown.

If you really want to replicate the perfect jewel tone, there’s nothing better than the real McCoy. For a touch of theater and a bit of fun, we adorned this charming bust with a chunky necklace of amethysts, purchased in Rajasthan. It’s a delightful way to inject color into your interiors…and keep your best jewels on display!

Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques, even in Japan as a ballet dancer in his 20’s. Performing in a strange and massive production by artist Steven Arnold, it was a heady time in the 1980’s. Steven’s work was collected by Baryshnikov, Diana Vreeland, Cher, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dali and others. This beautifully attired, early 20th century doll in its original case holds lovely memories of place and time, of the utterly unique Steven Arnold, and a circle of dear ballet friends that holds fast to this day. #ballet #japan #antiques

Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” naturally. The most profound gift from his mother and grandmother, and later by “Ed & Tony” was their embrace and encouragement in the development of his eye. Mentorship is everything. Btw, the Davenport part dessert service was made between c1800-1815. That’s well over 200 years of this extraordinary pearlware set existing somewhat intact. The painted scenes tell us it was likely created for an English country house. #antiques #antiqueceramics
