Garden-Inspired Green Rooms

Design Log

16 Jun

These days, when you hear the term “green design,” your mind immediately jumps to worthy notions of sustainability and environmental sensitivity. Commendable practices, for sure, but with summer upon us, we can’t help but celebrate another form of green design - the bold use of Mother Nature’s ... Read More about Garden-Inspired Green Rooms

Over the winter we built a chicken house at my house in the country. Along with our orchard, beehives, greenhouses and eventual cows (yes cows!), we'll soon have a farm that produces real honest-to-goodness food. This is not an entirely foreign idea since as a kid my family had chickens, a large ... Read More about Chicky Little

Ceilings – Interior Design’s No-Man’s Land

Design Log

In today's interiors, attention seems to be lavished on every possible detail, often without giving the ceiling a second thought. “Paint it white” seems to be the relentless mantra. But in looking at ceilings throughout history, astonishing attention was clearly paid to the space above our ... Read More about Ceilings – Interior Design’s No-Man’s Land

One thing that holds true about Matthew and me is that we're always on the lookout for a new adventure. While we don't always trek the same highways or probe the same mysteries, we've absolutely delighted in the journeys we've experienced together over the 7 years and counting of our business ... Anyone who knows me well, knows how I love Italy. It affects the way I live, the food I eat, and obviously is my destination of choice. And while I adore nearly every corner of that history-laden country, it is Venice that steals my heart. I am honored to serve as the new Chairman of Save Venice ... Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques, even in Japan as a ballet dancer in his 20’s. Performing in a strange and massive production by artist Steven Arnold, it was a heady time in the 1980’s. Steven’s work was collected by Baryshnikov, Diana Vreeland, Cher, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dali and others. This beautifully attired, early 20th century doll in its original case holds lovely memories of place and time, of the utterly unique Steven Arnold, and a circle of dear ballet friends that holds fast to this day. #ballet #japan #antiques

Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” naturally. The most profound gift from his mother and grandmother, and later by “Ed & Tony” was their embrace and encouragement in the development of his eye. Mentorship is everything. Btw, the Davenport part dessert service was made between c1800-1815. That’s well over 200 years of this extraordinary pearlware set existing somewhat intact. The painted scenes tell us it was likely created for an English country house. #antiques #antiqueceramics
